PUBLIC HEARING
BOARD OF SELECTMEN
Wednesday, August 1, 2007
7:00 PM

First Selectwoman Bransfield called the public hearing to order at 7:00 pm and read into the record the legal notice for this public hearing on the proposed ordinance: "Property Tax Relief for Elderly Homeowners."

Ralph Soden, 3 Holstein Lane, asked for clarification regarding what the limit is on assets for real property? Mrs. Bransfield answered that the value cannot exceed $150,000 for a resident to be eligible for tax relief. Mr. Soden asked what the qualifying incomes are to be eligible for this tax relief. Mrs. Bransfield read into record a letter from the Town Attorney regarding the income limits under state statute.

Mrs. Bransfield stated that the proposed ordinance allows tax deferral of tax payments for qualifying residents as a lien against the property plus 3% annual interest.

Bill Willinsky, 19 Rogers Road asked if the 2003 ordinance will be repealed and replaced with the proposed ordinance. Mrs. Bransfield replied that this is the intent.

Scott Adamsons, 41 Spring St. commented that he feels the income levels need to be adjusted. Mrs. Bransfield replied that the income levels are determined by state statute and need to be followed. Mr. Adamsons commented that he feels it is important to find a way to provide tax relief for senior citizens. Mrs. Bransfield stated that more information is needed regarding the income levels for citizens to qualify for tax relief. Once that information is received, another public hearing will be set.

There being no further public comment, First Selectwoman Bransfield closed the public hearing at 7:25 pm.
