Clean
Energy Task Force
Regular Meeting
Monday, May 21, 2007
6:30PM, Wagner Room, Portland Public Library
I. CALL MEETING
TO ORDER
Meeting called to order at 6:30 by Andy Bauer. In attendence: Colby
Gauthier, Joanne Luppi, Chris Phelps, Fran Schoell.
II. APPROVE
APRIL MEETING MINUTES
Minutes distributed and approved unanimously (motion by Fran, 2nd
by Joanne).
III. APPROVE
AGENDA
Motion to add Hybrid car event and Fuel Cell to agenda for discussion
was approved unanimously (motion by Joanne, 2nd by Colby)
IV. PUBLIC COMMENT
Larry Whitmore commended the Task Force for its organization.
V. PLANNING
FOR HYBRID CAR EVENT
Tom Malecki sent an email indicating that Middletown Toyota will
deliver a Prius for our Brownstone Festival Hybrid Car event. Chris
Phelps has a solid contact with Manchester Honda and indicated that
they are very helpful with these sort of promotion. John Trocciola
reported that he has had no response, despite multiple requests,
from either Ford or GM.
The consensus was praise for the members' efforts: Tom and Chris
will firm up the commitments from Honda and Toyota.
VI. PLANNING
FOR SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC SHOW AND TELL EVENT
So far seven CT Clean Energy Fund approved photovoltaic installers
have expressed interest in attending. This event is now scheduled
for Saturday, June 23rd, 10:00am at the Portland Senior Center at
7 Waverly Ave. It will be held either in the big room or outside
on the green.
Andy will contact the installers and work out an agenda for the
event.
Task Members will be called upon to assist in getting the word out.
VII. FUEL CELL
EFFORT
Andy recognized John's expertise in fuel cells (he has 40 years
in the business). John initiated a meeting with Andy and Susan Bransfield
to broach the idea. Susan likes the concept, especially if it can
be tied in to the High School/ Middle School campus that serves
the town as an emergency center. The possibility exists for funding
from the CT Clean Energy funds and department of Homeland Security.
John had drafted a letter for Susan to send to Congressman John
Larson. This letter has been sent and Susan, John and Andy will
look to meet with Rep. Larson's office in the near future.
VIII. DISCUSSION
ON DIESEL POLLUTION ISSUES
The effort in the CT Legislature to reduce diesel pollution from
school buses was acknowledged. That bill would reduce carcinogenic
diesel fumes from 3400 CT school buses and appears to enjoy bipartisan
support.
Conversely, a provision in one of the legislatures' energy bill
would expand the operation of emergency diesel generators to be
used as 'peaking plants'. This would have the effect of increasing
diesel pollution by the equivalent of 10,000 school buses.
IX. ADJOURN
MEETING
Motion to adjourn made at 7:13 by Chris Phelps, seconded by Fran
Schoell.
