PORTLAND POLICE DEPARTMENT
On Tuesday, May 29, 2007, the Portland Police Department in conjunction with the Brownstone Intermediate School held its annual DARE Graduation ceremony at St. Clement's Castle. The graduation was part of a program of activities for the sixth grade DARE participants, the culmination of the three-month DARE Program. This Program is taught annually by Sergeant Scott Cunningham, Officer Peter Paranzino (with his K-9 Niko), and Sergeant James Kelly of the Portland Police. St. Clement's Castle each year donates the use of its facility as well as lunch for the students for this event. They have continuously supported the DARE Program, enabling the Portland Police Department to continue every year to provide this beneficial drug, alcohol, and violence resistance course to Town youth. The students were greeted by a bagpiper, as well as Portland First Selectwoman Susan Bransfield, and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Sally Doyen. Students were also treated to a presentation by Judy Buch, a ventriloquist and puppeteer. After the students were presented with their DARE Certificates, one child from each class was chosen to read an essay they had written that expressed their commitment to remain drug, alcohol, and violence free. A police dog presentation concluded this event, after which the children enjoyed a gift bag provided by St. Clement's Castle. Please take a moment to peruse the photos (below) from this event on the website.
