The Portland Police Department Bike Patrol was started in 1999. Officer James Kelly and Officer David Bond are assigned to this detail and were certified in bike patrol after completing a five-day course.
There is one police mountain bike currently utilized by the department. The specially designed Trek bicycle that is equipped for the officers was paid for through donations from local businesses and residents.

The bike patrol covers the downtown area of Main Street and Route 66 as well as the Chatham Court/Brownstone Park area. It is also used during special town events such as the Brownstone Festival, Portland Agricultural Fair, and Town Fireworks Show. The bicycle is used for patrol purposes when there is full coverage on normal shifts to access certain areas more easily than in a police cruiser, and to interact with the public more often. This detail serves as another means of promoting the community policing philosophy to which the Portland Police Department is committed.

BICYCLE RODEO

On September 17th, the Portland Police Department sponsored a Bicycle Rodeo in conjunction with the Town Family Day Festival. It was a fun-filled day with all types of activities throughout the town enjoyed by all.

The Bike Rodeo had a very good turnout, with kids between the ages of 4 and 11 able to participate in an obstacle course and receive a free helmet from Dr. Mormile.

I would like to thank Dr. Mormile for donating bike helmets that were given to the children who participated in the Bike Rodeo. Thanks also to the Portland Fire Department for providing EMS service during this festival, and to the many other volunteers who assisted. A special thanks to Portland Police Officers James Kelly and David Bond for giving up their day and donating their time to make this an enjoyable event.

I hope you enjoy the photos of this event that are attached to this website.

Sincerely,

Lt. Ron Milardo

Lieutenant Ron Milardo
