The Town of Portland no longer has a Social Services Department.

If you are in need of help, here are some resources you can call direct::

  • State Assistance (financial, medical, food stamps): 704.3100, ask for the Intake Unit.
  • Social Security: 347.8562.
  • Connecticut Legal Services: 344.0380.
  • Winter Energy Assistance (CRT): 347.4465.
  • The Ecumenical Food Pantry is available for any resident of Portland. Located at the United Methodist Church, it is open Wednesday mornings from 10 a.m. to 12. You can also reach them during the week by leaving a message on their answering machine. Their phone number is 342.0091.
  • The Portland Food Bank is located in the basement of the Senior Center on 7 Waverly Avenue. It is open on Mondays and Thursdays, from 9 a.m. to noon. Phone number is 342.6795.

No child should be without health care. Health Care for UninSured Kids and Youth (HUSKY) makes medical care affordable for Connecticut’s children. The HUSKY program provides free or low-cost coverage for children under age 19. HUSKY covers doctor visits, glasses, dental care, emergency care, mental health services, and more.
