The Town
of Portland,
in conjunction with the Portland Board of Education, takes
great pride in introducing you to the Town Tech Educational Partnership
Program, more commonly referred to as Town Tech.
Through this program, participating
students get to apply their learning skills to real job situations
provided by Town government. In return, the Town gains substantial
benefits from their combined talents and energies.
On top of acquiring true-to-life work
experience, the students also receive high school credit toward
graduation, along with an impressive resume of accomplishments for
prospective colleges or employers!
While the original intent of this
program was to "afford students the opportunity to discover
the day-to-day responsibilities of Town government, which increasingly
reflect the complexities of a highly technical world," the
results have often been more than reciprocal! The Town Tech program
has substantially helped and encouraged Town government to incorporate
the ever-advancing benefits of new technology!
Thanks to these talented students,
the Town of Portland has acquired a GIS Mapping of our town-wide
water supply, a fixed assets inventory tracking system, innovative
annual reports, a school calendar and guide, bio-monitoring of reservoir
related streams, a monthly televised production called Portland
On the Move, and many other accomplishments as well!
To help finance this program, these
same students create and maintain web-sites for local businesses,
managing to expand their program beyond anything that was originally
imagined. We expect that future innovation and achievements will
continue in this direction.
