A dedicated group of parents had a dream 18 years ago of having better playgrounds for the children of Portland. This group created Portland's Own Playscapes (POP), which was the driving force behind building the Valley View and Gildersleeve playscapes.
Introducing POP² the next generation!! The Portland's Own Playscapes² (POP²) committee consists of parents from Valley View and Gildersleeve schools. The playscapes at both Gildersleeve and Valley View are now past their expected life-span and are in desperate need of updating. The playscapes at both schools are wooden structures and need to be replaced with current playground equipment that is safe and A.D.A. (American Disabilities Act) compliant. There are sections of the Gildersleeve playscape that have been taken down due to safety concerns. If that isn't enough, the deteriorating wood construction requires sanding and spraying to alleviate the problem with bees and splinters. The playscapes are utilized on a daily basis year round by both the students and residents in town.
Portland's Own Playscapes² (POP²) started in February of this year through the concerned efforts of Terry Errichetti and Kathi Thorell from Gildersleeve's PTO. Together Terry and Kathi contacted Valley View and on board were Kim Markesich and the Valley View team of parents. The committee solicited proposals from 7 different companies. The list was narrowed down to 3 vendors. At that point, the POP² committee invited Sandra Darna, Park and Recreation Director, and Carl Johnson, Grounds Maintenance Director to review the final prospects. References and existing product designs were checked out by the committee members, and the choice was narrowed down to one vendor whom the members felt best fit the needs of our target age group (5 through 10). The proposed designs for both schools will be constructed from vinyl and metal materials, making the playscapes virtually maintenance free. To date, the POP² committee has held several fundraisers which have raised $5,000 (5%) toward the $100,000 goal. The fundraisers included 2 movie nights at Destinta theatre (showing Because of Winn Dixie and Matagascar), teacher dress down days, pocket change collections, and holiday wreaths sales.
Donations in any amount are greatly appreciated by Portland's Own Playscapes² committee as well as the children of our community. Imagine if 1,000 families donated $100 or 2,000 families donated $50 this dream can become a reality!
All donations are tax deductible.

LATEST UPDATES:

PLAYSCAPE "DREAM" ABOUT TO BECOME A "REALITY"

Portland's Own Playscapes (POP²) committee is pleased to announce that their goal to replace the Gildersleeve and Valley View playscapes has been achieved. The "dream" has become a "reality" through the generous contributions and community support of the many successful fundraisers held over the last year. The POP² committee would like to thank one and all for the generous contributions (both monetary and in-kind) we have received to help the children of Portland enjoy new playscapes that are virtually maintenance free while meeting today's guidelines for safety and accessibility for years to come!

The POP2 committee has ordered the Gildersleeve playscape and is putting the final touches on the Valley View playscape. Mark your calendars as we do need volunteers to help with our "Community Build" of both playscapes. Equipment required would be a cordless drill, ratchets with 9/16 sockets, shovels, steel rakes, outdoor rated extension cords, wheelbarrows and box cutters. If you have any of the tools on the list please bring them to the build, but most importantly we need you! Our goal is to get 40 volunteers to facilitate this installation and is not limited to Gildersleeve and Valley View families! Volunteers must be 18 years of age and older.

The Gildersleeve Build is scheduled for Friday July 28th and Saturday July 29th with 2 time slots available from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. and 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. The build will take place at Gildersleeve Elementary school rain or shine. The Valley View build is scheduled for Friday, September 8th and Saturday, September 9th with the same time slots. If you are available to help with either build or both please send an email to Kathi Cohun at cohun@sbcglobal.net or contact Phyllis Prokop 342-3460 if you have any additional questions.

SPRING GOLF OUTING

The event is $90 per person which includes continental breakfast, lunch, and 18 holes of golf with a cart. Contact Andrea Alfano 342.3113 or Kathi Cohun 342.3180.

FAMILY NIGHT AT KID CITY

A spokesperson from the group stated, "We are pleased with our fundraising efforts as we approach our 1 year anniversary on this project. We are at 50% of our $100,000 goal and we are aggressively moving forward to complete the funding while targeting a 2006 build date for the playscapes."

Donation levels have been established for companies, families, and memorials to be placed on the playground signs: Bronze Level: $250; Silver: $500; Gold: $1,000; Platinum $1,500 or more. All donations in any amount are welcome and are tax deductible. Checks may be made payable to: Town of Portland, Attention: Portland's Own Playscape²; P.O. Box 71; Portland, CT 06480.
