If you need to register or obtain additional information for any of the programs listed below, contact the Parks and Recreation Office at 342-6757. Space is limited and advanced registration is required for all programs.

Easter Egg Hunt

The Parks and Recreation Department will hold the Annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 12 , 2003 Children ages 1 - 10 are welcome to participate in the egg hunt. Special prizes will be awarded for the special eggs. Children will hunt for eggs based on ages and will be separated accordingly. In the event of rain, the egg hunt will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2003, at 1:00 p.m. A visit from the Easter Bunny is also planned. Portland Jr. Women's Club will be giving out special treats.

Thanks to the Portland Exchange Club for a donation to this event.

 

Happy Notes – Morning session

The winter session of Happy Notes will begin on Wednesday, February 26, 2003 at the Portland Library. The program will meet from 11:15 - noon. The dates will be February 26, March 5,12,26,and 26. The program which, consists of music, songs, movement and lots of fun is designed for the toddler up to 5 years old. The cost is $40.

Happy Hands – Friday Class

A new Happy Hands winter Friday session will be starting on February 21, 2003. The class is held at the Portland Library. Registration is being accepted for the 4-week program Happy Hands for pre-schoolers. This program allows your child to be creative through arts and crafts. Each week will feature a new project(s) that they will finish and take home. The program meets on Friday mornings from 10:00 – 10:45. Class dates are February 21,28 March 7 & 14. The cost for the 4-week program is $37.

Interval Training

Want to burn fat AND tone muscles? Well, interval training is the answer. This class combines an aerobic workout with weight training for maximum results. NO INTRICATE CHOREOGRAPHY OR COMPLEX ROUTINES TO MEMORIZE!! This 75-minute class includes a warm-up, interval training for both cardio and muscle toning, followed by stretching and abdominal work. Class is taught by an AFAA certified personal trainer and group fitness instructor. Participants are asked to bring two hand weights that they are comfortable with, a towel, water bottle and mat for stretching and ab work. This 10-week class will meet at Valley View School on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning March 18, from 6:00 – 7:15 p.m. Cost $45 – residents and $50 non-residents.

Yoga

Why practice yoga? It’s a unique way to integrate your body, mind and spirit. It stretches and tone muscles, invigorates circulation, helps improve concentration and connects you to your self. The 6-week sessions meet at Trinity Church, Main Street from 5:15 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Janet Karp leads the class. Session 1 – March 3,10, 17, 24, 31 and April 7 and Session 2 – April 14,21,28,May 5,12 and 19. Cost is $45 residents and $50 non-residents. Maximum 12 students

Crafty Kids - After School Holiday Arts and Crafts program

Does your child enjoy glitter and glue or have a talent with crafts. Then this is the program for them. Mary Moise (Happy Hands) will provide instruction for your child to complete a project special for the holidays. There will be 2 sessions. One will meet at Valley View School (Art Room) from 3:10 - 4:30 p.m., Feb. 4, March 11, April 8, May 6 and June 3 and a session will meet at Gildersleeve School (Room 2) from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m., March 12, April 9, May 7 and June 4. A child may attend all classes or a single class. Advanced registration is required. The cost per class is $8. Your child will complete a project to take home during the class time.

2nd Class Added - Pre-Ballet Class – for girls and boys ages 2 – 4. We will be emphasizing motor skill development, coordination skills, limbering and muscle toning along with the basic ballet steps. Children are to wear comfortable clothing and slippers. Classes will be held on Tuesdays beginning April 22nd - May 27th (6 weeks) 9:15 – 9:45 a.m. in the lower level of Trinity Church on Main Street. The cost for the 6-week class will be $48. Class size is limited to 8.

Beginner Tap Class – for girls and boys ages 3 and up. An introduction to the world of tap-dance. We will learn the basics of tap including toe taps, heel taps, shuffles and more! Children should wear comfortable clothing and tap shoes. Classes will be held on Tuesdays beginning February 25th – April 1st (6 weeks) 2 – 2:30 p.m. in the lower level of Trinity Church on Main Street. The cost for the 6-week class will be $48. Class size is limited to 10.

Intro to Jazz - for girls and boys ages 5 and up. Class will include simple warm-up and stretches and different styles of jazz including Hip-Hop, lyrical and rock. Children should wear comfortable clothing. Classes will be held on Fridays beginning April 11th (4 weeks) 4:30 – 5:15 p.m. in the lower level of Trinity Church on Main Street. Dates are April 11, 25, May 2 and 9th. The cost for the 4-week class will be $48. Class size is limited to 12

Digital Photography

Do you have a digital camera that you received for holidays or a birthday and are afraid to use it? Is the cameral still sitting in the box? Well here is your chance to begin sending photos to distant relatives, creating your own photos, calendars, holiday cards etc. The class will meet for 3 weeks. Topics will include learning about your camera and settings, photo enhancing and editing. Class dates are March 17, 24 and 31 from 7 – 9:30 at the Parks and Recreation Office, 265 Main Street. Cost of the class is $45 residents and $50 non-residents. Min. enrollment is 5.

Recreational Horseshoe League
The Portland Recreational Horseshoe League is looking for players to fill vacant spots before the league play begins this spring. This is a mixed league with handicapped scoring. Registration is going on right now. To register or get more information, please contact Pat Green at 342-2746. Please leave a message if no answer. 

T Ball and Girls Softball Registrations
For the convenience of working parents, registrations will be accepted at the Recreation Office from 4:30 –7 p.m. on February 4. Registrations will also be accepted during regular office hours. Deadline for registrations is February 28.

Trips

New York in a Day
Shop ‘til you drop or visit a museum. Space is limited on the bus leaving on April 26, 2003. The bus will leave Portland Town Hall/Senior Center complex at 8 a.m. and will leave New York at 6 p.m. The cost of the bus is $24. The bus will make stops along 5th Avenue. If your looking for a change of pace for the day call Parks and Recreation at 342-6757 to make your reservations.

Bus to Boston
Take a trip to historic Boston and tour at your leisure. Stop at Quincy Market, follow the freedom trail or visit the aquarium. So much to see in Boston don’t miss the bus. The bus will Portland Town Hall/Senior Center complex on March 15, 2003 at 8 a.m. and leaves Boston at 6:00 p.m. If you’re interested in the Flower Show in Boston, the bus will make a stop for your convenience. Tickets for the flower show can be purchased at the door. The cost of the bus trip is $23, which covers your transportation. This trip fills fast so don’t delay.

Bronx Zoo
April 15, 2003 – Bronx Zoo. Part of the April Vacation Program. Visit the over 265 wooded acres that house more than 4000 animals. Don’t miss the elephants, tigers and monkeys! This family trip to the Bronx Zoo will leave Portland Middle School on Tuesday, April 18th at 8:00 a.m. and leave the zoo at approximately 4:30 p.m. The package includes roundtrip motorcoach transportation and the Zooventure admission package. The cost is $25 per person. Space is limited. Call 342-6757 to reserve your seat. Please leave your name and number of persons attending. Payment is due at the time of reservations.

Women’s Big East Tournament

If you’re a women’s basketball fan (Go UCONN Huskies!!)The Portland Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring a trip to Rutgers University for the Big East Quarterfinals on Sunday, March 9, 2003. The trip includes admission to 2 games and bus transportation. The bus will depart to New Jersey at 9 a.m. and return after the games. The cost per person is $64.00. Seats are limited. Contact the Parks and Recreation for registrations.

New York Yankee’s vs. Boston Red Sox

July 4, 2003 – New York Yankee’s vs. Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium, New York. The cost is $80 per person, which includes your bus transportation and ticket to the 1:00 game. Seats are limited. Don’t miss this opportunity and register early. Bus will leave Portland at 8:15 a.m. and return approximately ½ hour after the game ends. (1 bus)
