Happy Notes

The fall session of Happy Notes will begin on Wednesday, September 11, 2002 at the Portland Library. The program will meet from 11:15 - noon. The dates will be September 11,18,25,Oct. 9 and October 16(no class on Oct 2). The program which, consists of music, songs, movement and lots of fun is designed for the toddler up to 5 years old. The cost is $35.

Happy Hands

A new Happy Hands fall session will be starting in September. The classes will meet on Thursday’s beginning August 15th. The class is held at the Portland Library. Registration is being accepted for the 4-week program Happy Hands for pre-schoolers. This program allows your child to be creative through arts and crafts. Each week will feature a new project that they will finish and take home. The program meets on Monday mornings from 10:00 – 10:45. Class dates are September 16,23,30 and October 7th. The cost for the 4-week program is $37.

Little Scientist

Does your child wonder how things work or like science and nature, get them in on this opportunity to have fun with a "hands on" approach to science. This 8-week session will begin on Thursday, September 26 – November 21. The topics for this session will be The Prehistoric Dinosaur, Digging for Fossils, Why do Leaves Turn Colors in the Fall, Magical Magnets, Center of Gravity, All About Inertia, Science of Sound and Why Do Balls Bounce? Maureen Strand will return to teach the class. Classes meet on Thursday’s from 4 – 4:45 p.m. for ages 3-5 yrs. and 5 – 5:15 p.m. for ages 6-9 yrs. at the Portland Senior Center. The cost is $90. Maximum 8 students per class.

New Program! - Kids Blast

Kids Blast is a new before and after school program through Parks and Recreation Department that will encourage creativity and individuality for all of the students. The activities will include games, arts & crafts, and sports (indoors and outdoors), special events, free play and periodic field trips. There will also be a homework time where the children can get help with their homework. Snacks will be provided in the afternoon. The program will meet in the Middle School Cafeteria Monday to Fridays from 7:30 a.m.- 9:00 a.m. and 2:40 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Children in grades K-8 will be allowed to participate. The fee structure is as follows: Full time (Before and After School) $70 – 1st child and $60 2nd child. Part time (Mornings Only) $30 – 1st child and $20 2nd child or Part time (Afternoons Only) $50 – 1st child $40 2nd child. Individual days are also available.

New Program! - Mom & Me – Exercise on the Go

New this fall, an exercise program designed for moms with tots. The program utilizes your child’s stroller as the exercise equipment and the outdoors as the perfect gym. The Mom & Me class offers mothers a great way to get back in shape while being with their child as well as other mothers. A combination of stretches and strolling will complete the work out and is great for all levels of ability. You need no special stroller or equipment, just good sneakers and a water bottle. So bundle up and get moving. Children can range from 4 wks – 3 yrs. Classes will be held on Monday’s and Wednesday’s at Co. #2 Fire Station (parking lot off of Bell Court) at 9:30 a.m. Class starts on September 23rd – December 18th. The cost for the 12-week session is $48. If weather is inclement, class will be held indoors. If you have questions on the program you can contact Alicia Currier at 342-08765.

New Program! - Kreative Kidz After School Arts Program

Discover your artistic self and come alive with a variety of fun projects in arts and crafts. Join the fun to using materials to complete projects to take home. Let your imagination take over as your create. Mary Moise (Miss Mary from Happy Hands) will help the participants with different projects each week. Project may focus around the time of year or a holiday. All supplies included. This new 8-week program will meet on Tuesday and Thursday’s from 3:45 – 4:45 p.m. at Portland Middle School cafeteria beginning September 17 – October 29th. There will be a total of 16 classes. The cost of the session will be $60.

Yoga

Are you feeling overwhelmed and need to relax, join the 6-week fall session of yoga which will meets on Monday’s beginning September 9th from 5:15 – 6:30 p.m. at Trinity Church, Main Street, Portland. Class will meet September 9 – October 21(no class on October 14th). Yoga is characterized by conscious use of one’s breath and relaxation. This class emphasizes stretching, exercises, relaxation and meditation to give an inner spiritual experience, strengthen the nervous system and reduce stress. The class requires no previous knowledge of yoga, and is for all levels of fitness and flexibility. Students should wear loose clothing, bring a mat or blanket to sit on and water to drink. The cost of the 6-week session will be $45 for residents and $50 for non-residents. Advanced registration is required and space is limited

Jewelry Casting

The Recreation Department will be offering an 8-week - Jewelry Casting class beginning Wednesday, September 11, 2002, 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Dates are September 11 – October 30. The class will be held in Middletown at the studio of the instructor, Wendy Black-Nasta. Directions will be available by calling the office at 342-6757. The cost of the class will be $120.00 and a $30.00 lab fee. Students will learn many techniques of casting such as lost wax casting, coal casting, drop casting and temporary molds. Space is limited. No previous experience is needed.

Special 2002 Six Flags New England Discount Tickets Program

Back again. Discounted Six Flag tickets will be offered for the 2002 season. This special program is designed so you may go any time on your own during the 2002 season. The tickets are good for any of the rides, attractions and Water Park. This year adult (48" and above) ticket prices at the gate are $39.99, our special program price is $22.50. This is a $17.49 discount. Save money and time and order your tickets in advance. Tickets must be ordered in advance and are available for pickup now through September 20, 2002. Order early.

Trips

West Side of New York – A Day on Your own!

Check out the shopping on the West Side. Stop at Zabar’s for gourmet foods or kitchen gadgets. See a show at Lincoln Center. Plan your own day. Space is limited on the bus leaving October 5, 2002. The cost of the bus is $24. The bus will also make stops along 5th Avenue.

Salem Haunted Happenings Tour – Saturday, October 19, 2002. Trip includes bus transportation, tour of House of Seven Gables, Witch Museum, leisure time to enjoy many haunted happenings and a tour director. The bus will leave Portland Town Hall at 7:00 a.m. and leave Salem at approx. 6:00 p.m. The cost of the trip is $59 per person. A deposit of ½ of each seat is required at the time of the reservation.
