The Summer Playground and Teen Adventure programs will meet from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. (1/2 day). Activities include sports, free play, games, arts and crafts, field trips, special events and theme days.

  • Registrations will be accepted after March 3rd. Early registrations are due by May 5th and will be on a first come/first serve basis. Space will be limited at each site.
  • Pre-Registrations are required for your child(ren) for any camps or playgrounds. A registration form must be completed for each child. Registrations can be made at the Recreation Office at 265 Main (the old Recreation Office) or by mail. The 1st week's payment must accompany the registration form. Payment for additional weeks is due Thursday proceeding the week of camp your child is registered.
  • Due to new state regulations, a health record is now required for each child. A copy of the health record from your child’s school or physician must accompany the completed camp registration for along with payment.
  • Registration can be done on a daily basis for Playground Plus, Summer Playground and Teen Adventure. Sibling discounts are given for all camps.
  • Camp fees include field trips admissions except for Lake Compounce, busing and 1 T-shirt. Scholarships are available for families in need. Call for more information.
  • Each camper will be receiving a T-shirt to be worn on field trips. This will allow the staff to identify our group. Please make sure that your child is wearing the shirt on trip days.
  • All programs will meet rain or shine. On field trip days, there will be no other programs at the playground. If your child is unable to attend a field trip, please make other accommodations.
  • Parents are responsible for signing their child in and out of the program. If someone other than yourself is picking your child up, parents need to provide a note to the staff that morning.
  • Campers should bring a picnic style lunch daily unless informed of different arrangements. Refrigeration is not available. Ice packs are suggested.
  • Campers must wear sneakers everyday. This is an important safety issue. Sandals, flip-flops and open toes shoes are not permitted.
  • Provide name labels for all items brought to camp. Clothes, towels, swimsuits, lunchboxes, etc. We have many items at the end of camp in the lost and found pile.
  • Children should be discouraged from bringing items or toys from home (i.e. game boys, walkmans, etc.) The Portland Recreation Department is not responsible for items lost or stolen.
  • We encourage parents to provide sunscreen. Send a bottle clearly labeled with your child's name. Announcements will be made for children to apply sunscreen.
  • We also encouage bug spray for children attending Noyes Camp. Please send in clearly labeled bottle with your child’s name.
  • Snacks will be provided at the Playground Plus Program.
  • If your child is attending the Playground program at Valley View School you must use the lower parking lot and not park on High Street. The police have given notice parking tickets will be issued to cars parked on High Street.
  • We encourage participants to stay for the day unless a note is sent in for the child to be picked up early. This allows us better planning of activities and a better program for your child(ren).
  • Busing for all field trips and "All Camp" days will be provided by Nichols Bus Co.
  • Weekly camp newsletters will be available for parents at the sites. Information will include trips, special activities and projects.

Camp Fees

The camp registration fees have increased this year due to the increased costs in staffing, supplies, transportation, admission costs for field trips and entertainment. The time structure has changed. Because one person staffs the Recreation Office, it makes it difficult for tracking registrations and payments for regular hours and extended hours. In order to become more efficient, the changes were necessary. The benefit for parents is if for some reason they are delayed they know their child will be cared for. Each camp (with the exception of Kiddie Kamp) now has either a ½ day 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. or a full day which is 7:30 a.m. – 6 p.m.

There are 2 short weeks in the program this year. Since school is schedule to get out mid week the camp fee will be pro-rated. It will also be prorated for the July 4th holiday.

If a family is requesting financial assistance, you need to contact the Parks and Recreation Office prior to submitting the registration form. Care4Kids program is also available for families who need assistance.

Camp Discounts
Once again the Recreation Department is offering sibling discounts. If you child is attending 5 full weeks of camp or more either ½ day or full day and payment is made in full by June 1st, a discount of 10% of the total may be deducted.
Refunds will be given before the program begins. Once the activity has begun, there will be no refunds given except in the case of illness, injury or relocation. I hope parents understand that with limited amount of staff in the department, it makes it very difficult to make many changes or track attendance.
Many changes have occurred in the summer program over the years and we have tried to implement your suggestions given through the survey at the end of camp.

Field Trips
All field trip fees
are included in the price of camp with the exception of Lake Compounce. On field trip days, there will be no other programs at the playground. If your child is unable to attend a field trip, please make other accommodations.
Participants may need to bring extra spending money for food, souvenirs or other items not included in admission fees.
Parents will receive information on trips at their respective playground locations.
Parents are invited to join us on any day of camp including field trips. If you would like to go on any scheduled trip, please let the site supervisor know on the first day of camp for the week so your name may be added to the sign-up sheet. This will help with planning the number of buses needed.
If your child is planning to attend the trip on a particular day, please make sure that his or her name is on the sign-up sheet.
