  • Parenting Workshop Series

    Portland Youth Services and Valley View have joined forces again to hold Raising Socially Competent Kids, and acclaimed discussion/video series presented by Jane Richards-Jones from Creative Parenting. The series will begin on April 10th and be held from 7 PM to p PM, in the Valley View Library. The line-up is as follows:

    • Wednesday, April 10th, Understanding and Managing Temperament.
    • Monday, April 22nd, Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child.
    • Thursday, May 2nd, Encouraging Friendships.
    • Thursday, May 30th, When Mom and Dad Disagree.

    Throughout the four workshops, you will share experiences and learn information on topics like the nine temperamental traits and how to manage spirited of hard to raise children. You will find out ways to encourage childhood friendships and social skills. Discover how to enhance self-awareness, interpersonal skills, understanding and managing emotions in emotionally intelligent children. Also, look at the different types of parenting styles that exist and how to improve the lines of communication. Don't miss out on this fun, interactive workshop! The program combines humor, information, and skill building in a fun and friendly atmosphere of group encouragement and support. The cost is $5.00 per family, per workshop. Financial aid and scholarships are available, but space is limited, so sigh up soon.

No child should be without health care. Health Care for UninSured Kids and Youth (HUSKY) makes medical care affordable for Connecticut’s children. The HUSKY program provides free or low-cost coverage for children under age 19. HUSKY covers doctor visits, glasses, dental care, emergency care, mental health services, and more. WIC (Women, Infants and Children Program) is located at 59 Crescent Street, Middletown. Phone number: (860) 344-8014. Comes to Portland monthly at the Portland Library. Provides free supplemental foods and nutritional information. There are income eligibility requirements.
